Sona - Gold. Masoori - Fragrant. The golden grain of Southern India, loved across Karnataka for its natural lightness and the warmth it brings to everyday cooking. From chitranna on a festive afternoon to the curd rice that quietly ends every good meal.

Karnataka has always had a name for its most beloved everyday grain: Sona Masoori - the golden aromatic rice. Named for the slight golden hue of its uncooked grains and its gentle fragrance, this is the rice behind Kinnal toys passed through generations, the familiar ritual of shaving fresh coconut, Mangalore buns warm from the griddle, and every meal that ends with the sweetness of Mysore Pak.
Nurtured across the sun-drenched Deccan fields of Southern India - where the rich soil of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana shape one of India’s most distinctive grains - Sona Masoori carries the golden warmth of its homeland. Naturally aged, each grain becomes soft, fluffy, flavourful and light - the everyday gold that millions reach for, meal after meal.
Inspired by the vibrant storytelling of Madhubani art, the packaging showcases intricate folk-inspired motifs celebrating everyday life, warmth and tradition. Featuring the soop and the timeless okhli, it honours the rituals that make every meal meaningful - a tribute to the everyday moments that carry generations of memory.

Sona Masoori is a medium-grain rice from the fields of Southern India — primarily Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. The name means ‘Golden Fragrant’ — referring to the grain’s slight golden hue and gentle aroma. Naturally aged, it cooks soft, fluffy and light — Karnataka’s most beloved everyday rice and a staple across South Indian households.
Different rice types for different purposes. Sona Masoori is medium grain, soft and fluffy, with a mild aroma — best for everyday South Indian cooking, chitranna, curd rice, and dishes where the grain absorbs flavour. Basmati is long grain, aromatic, elongates when cooked — best for biryani and pulao. Each has its own irreplaceable role in Indian cooking.
Sona Masoori excels in Karnataka’s everyday cooking: Chitranna (lemon rice — where the grain absorbs tangy flavours perfectly), Bisibelebath (the comforting Karnataka one-pot classic), Vangi Bath (brinjal rice), curd rice, and sambar rice. Its soft, fluffy texture absorbs spices and curries beautifully while holding its form — making it ideal wherever rice is the star of the dish.
Both are everyday South Indian rice varieties, but from different traditions. Sona Masoori is the golden everyday grain of Karnataka — soft, fluffy and versatile, ideal for chitranna, bisibelebath and curd rice. Parboiled Ponni is the everyday staple of Tamil Nadu — steam-processed before milling for a firmer texture that holds form in wet dishes like sambar rice and pongal. Different grains, different regions, different dishes.
True Origins is India Gate’s celebration of India’s diverse rice-growing regions. Sona Masoori Rice is sourced from the fertile Deccan fields of Southern India — where sunshine, rich soil and generations of farming wisdom have shaped one of India’s most distinctive golden grains.
