From The Fields Of West Bengal | True Origins Rice
Soft, aromatic, naturally aged short grain, Gobindobhog rice carries the warmth of West Bengal’s traditions in every grain. From bhoger khichuri offered with devotion to celebratory payesh on festive evenings, khichdi on rainy afternoons, and family meals remembered fondly.

Some traditions arrive with the dhaak on puja mornings, alpana at the doorstep, and something special simmering in the kitchen. Gobindobhog Rice has long been part of these moments, from bhog offered with devotion to celebratory payesh on Lakshmi Puja evenings, from khichdi on rainy afternoons to family meals remembered fondly.
Grown in the fertile fields of West Bengal, where river-fed soil and gentle humidity have shaped paddy cultivation for generations, Gobindobhog carries Bengal’s authentic essence. Naturally aged, each grain becomes aromatic, soft and flavourful - a rice that turns any dish into a cherished memory.
Inspired by the iconic folk art of Jamini Roy, the packaging celebrates Bengal’s distinctive visual language through expressive forms and traditional motifs - the kash phool, ektara, shankh, and chandmala. A tribute to a culture that turns everyday moments into celebrations of joy.

Gobindobhog is a short, aromatic rice variety from the fertile fields of West Bengal. Naturally aged for greater aroma and flavour, it is the traditional choice for payesh, bhoger khichuri, and festive cooking. The name itself is rooted in devotion — the rice offered as ‘bhog’ to Gobindo (Lord Krishna) in temples and homes across Bengal.
Gobindobhog and basmati are two distinct varieties. Gobindobhog is a short-grain aromatic rice — soft, comforting, with a distinctive nutty aroma unique to Bengal’s soil and climate. Basmati is a long-grain variety known for elongation and separation when cooked. For payesh, Bhoger Khichuri and Bengali festive preparations, Gobindobhog is the authentic choice. Basmati cannot replicate its aroma or texture.
Gobindobhog excels in dishes where its soft texture and nutty aroma are the hero: Payesh (Bengali kheer), Bhoger Khichuri (especially for Durga Puja bhog), Annaprashan (first rice-feeding ceremony), and Bhog preparations for temple offerings.
The aroma comes from the grain variety itself — shaped by West Bengal’s specific soil, climate, and cultivation traditions — and deepened through natural aging. No other region can replicate this aroma, which is why Gobindobhog remains irreplaceable for authentic Bengali cooking.
True Origins is India Gate’s celebration of India’s diverse rice-growing regions.
